Settings are named exactly as the theme editor names them, and the values described are the ones a fresh install receives.
Getting started#
Installing and previewing Lykia#
Install Lykia from the Shopify Theme Store; it arrives in Online Store → Themes in your Shopify admin. Use Customize to open the theme editor, and preview the theme on your store before publishing it. Nothing in this guide requires editing code — everything described here is done in the theme editor.
What the Lykia preset sets up#
Lykia installs with one preset, Lykia, which arranges the home page from the sections in this guide, configures the Announcement bar, Header and Footer, and pre-fills the theme settings with the values this documentation describes. Two more pieces arrive configured: the Cart drawer (the sliding cart panel) and the Newsletter popup — the popup ships switched off, and appears only after you check Show popup in its settings.
The theme ships a preset, not a catalog: no products, collections, or photographs are included. Picture slots start empty and show neutral placeholder graphics until you add your own images, and text fields arrive with short sample copy that shows what each one is for, ready to replace with your own words. No product, collection or page handles are filled in, so anything that points at a specific product waits for your choice — Complete the look, for example, stays hidden until you pick its companion products.
Adding, moving and removing sections#
In the theme editor, choose the page you want from the dropdown at the top, then use Add section in the left-hand panel. Drag sections to reorder them. On a computer, point to a section in the left-hand panel and use its Hide or Delete icon. On a phone, tap Sections, tap the section, then tap the ⋯ icon and choose Hide or Remove. Each section's settings open when you click its name; sections that hold repeating items (cards, slides, tabs) manage those items as blocks listed beneath the section. Settings that depend on another choice appear only once that choice is made — for example, the Buy buttons block's Add to bag Background color shows only when its Style is Custom. Heading sizes scale with the window width and reach the size you set only on wide screens; the editor preview is narrower than most desktop screens, so a size change can look small while you edit, and each of these settings says so in its info line.
What a section shows before you add content#
Two behaviors are worth knowing before you start building, because they explain most "where did it go?" moments:
- A section arrives with sample content and leaves the page only when emptied. A section added from Add section arrives with short sample content that shows what it is for, and shows at once; clear it all and the section leaves the page — no empty band, no gap. The exceptions behave sensibly:
- The Collection and Collections grid template sections are pages in their own right and show their own "no products" or empty-collection messages.
- The Contact form always shows its working form, because the form is the content.
- Custom Liquid and Custom section simply collapse to nothing until you put something in them.
- Three sections show a stand-in only in the theme editor, so you can see and style them while you build: Featured product shows a placeholder until you pick a product, Product countdown shows a sample countdown until it has an end date, and Store list shows a sample boutique until you add Boutique blocks.
- Your store shows none of them until they are set up.
- A missing picture becomes a neutral placeholder only where the picture is the content.
- Where a card, tile or slide exists to show an image — category cards, gallery cards, product preview cards, a blog hero — an empty image slot shows a neutral placeholder graphic, so the layout stays visible while you build.
- Most sections use Shopify's built-in placeholder; Brand statement, About team, About timeline, Promo banner cards, Lookbook and Video section use a simple drawn outline of the theme's own.
- Where an image is decorative — a background, a texture — leaving it empty simply omits it, and the section falls back to its own background color.
- One deliberate case to know: Hero text reveal never shows a placeholder; with no image you see its own background color under the overlay, which is by design and not a fault.
Each section's entry below states what it shows when empty.
Changing colors and fonts#
Store-wide colors live in Theme settings → Colors, and the two store-wide fonts in Theme settings → Typography — both are described below. Many sections also carry their own color pickers, which affect that section only; a section's colors always win over the store-wide ones within that section.
A note on languages#
Lykia includes its storefront text in English and German. To sell in another language, add it in Settings → Languages and translate it with Shopify's Translate & Adapt app. Theme editor labels are in English, and some also appear in German.
Metafields Lykia reads#
Lykia reads the 28 product and collection metafields below and no others (no shop, variant, page or blog metafields). Every one is optional: each section works from its own settings or blocks, and a filled metafield takes over for that one product or collection. To use a metafield, create its definition in Settings → Metafields and metaobjects with the namespace, key and type listed below, then fill it in on the product or collection.
Products
custom.sale_end_date— single line text. The end date of the Product countdown section, written as YYYY-MM-DD or DD-MM-YYYY with a four-digit year (hyphens or slashes both work; a date that doesn't exist, such as 31-02-2027, can't be read); when it is filled, the four Fallback settings are ignored for that product and the three metafields below set the rest. Without it: Fallback end date and Fallback end time set the end; the start date comes from Fallback start date when it is filled (the time from Fallback start time, when that is filled too), and otherwise from the two start metafields below.custom.sale_end_time— single line text. The end time, read only whencustom.sale_end_dateis filled. Without it: 23:59.custom.sale_start_date— single line text. The start date, read whencustom.sale_end_dateis filled, or when the Fallback end date is in use and Fallback start date is blank. Without it: no start date.custom.sale_start_time— single line text. The start time, read whencustom.sale_end_dateis filled, or when the Fallback end date is in use unless Fallback start date and Fallback start time are both filled. Without it: 00:00.custom.hover_color— single line text. A color name, such as one of the product's Color option values, that picks the hover image on Collection carousel tabs cards. Without it: none — the card picks another color's image, or the second image, by itself.custom.features— metaobject list. The features shown by the Product features section. Without it: Feature blocks.custom.faq— metaobject list (question + answer). The questions in the Product FAQ + image section. Without it: FAQ Item blocks.custom.faq_image— file (image). The image in the Product FAQ + image section. Without it: Fallback image.lykia.lead_description— single line text. A short lead line beneath the price in the Product section. Without it: none — the line is left out.lykia.spec_1_labeltolykia.spec_3_label— single line text. The three Spec Strip labels in the Product section. Without it: Left cell label, Middle cell label and Right cell label.lykia.spec_1_valuetolykia.spec_3_value— single line text. The three Spec Strip values. Without it: Left cell value (fallback), Middle cell value (fallback) and Right cell value (fallback).lykia.care_instructions— list of single line text. The Care tab's items in the Product section. Without it: the Care block's items.lykia.complete_look_products— list of products. The companion products in Complete the look. Without it: Companion product blocks.

custom.hero_heading— single line text. The Collection hero banner heading. Without it: Heading, then the collection's title.custom.hero_description— rich text. The Collection hero banner description. Without it: Description, then the collection's description.custom.hero_image— file (image). The Collection hero banner background. Without it: Background image, then the collection's own image.custom.carousel_heading— single line text. The Category carousel heading. Without it: Heading.custom.carousel_categories— metaobject list. The Category carousel items; when filled, the Collection hero banner hides its Category link row. Without it: Category blocks.custom.promo_heading— single line text. The Promo banner cards heading. Without it: Section heading.custom.promo_banners— metaobject list. The Promo banner cards. Without it: Banner card blocks.custom.story_heading— single line text. The Collection story + FAQ heading. Without it: Heading.custom.story_description— rich text. The Collection story + FAQ description. Without it: Description.custom.story_image— file (image). The Collection story + FAQ image. Without it: Image.custom.faq_items— metaobject list (question + answer). The Collection story + FAQ questions. Without it: FAQ item blocks.
Metaobjects Lykia reads
Lykia reads metaobjects only through the metafields above — no metaobject pages and no direct lookups. To use one, create a metaobject definition with the fields listed for it. Four shapes, by field key:
- Product feature —
image(file),label, title, description(rich text),button_text,button_url(single line text). Throughcustom.features. Shows in the Product features section, one image-and-text row per entry, with a button when both button fields are filled. Without it: Feature blocks; with neither, the section stays hidden. - Promo banner —
image(file),heading, subtitle, link(single line text). Throughcustom.promo_banners. Shows as the cards of the Promo banner cards section. Without it: Banner card blocks; with neither, the section stays hidden. - Category link —
image(file),label(single line text),collection(collection). Throughcustom.carousel_categories. Shows as the tiles of the Category carousel section: the collection supplies the link, and the image and title when those fields are empty; while it is filled, Collection hero banner hides its own category links. Without it: Category blocks; with neither, the carousel stays hidden. - FAQ item —
question(single line text),answer(rich text). Throughcustom.faq_items(collections) andcustom.faq(products). Shows as the questions of Collection story + FAQ and Product FAQ + image, and in their FAQ structured data. Without it: FAQ item blocks (FAQ Item blocks in Product FAQ + image).
Words this guide uses#
- Swatch — a small color (or image) chip that stands for a product variant, shown instead of a text button. Lykia's swatches are controlled store-wide from Theme settings → Color swatches.
- Metafield — a custom field you attach to a product (or other resource) in your Shopify admin to hold extra data. Some Lykia sections read specific metafields; each such section's entry names the metafields it reads and says whether they override a setting or only fill in when it is blank.
- Aspect ratio — the shape of an image frame, written as width:height. Portrait (3:4) is taller than wide; Landscape (4:3) is wider than tall; Square (1:1) is equal.
- Alt text — a short written description of an image, read aloud by screen readers and indexed by search engines. Fill it in wherever the theme offers it.
- Liquid — Shopify's template language. Lykia's Custom Liquid section and block accept Liquid, HTML and CSS you paste in; writing it is up to you (and outside theme support).
- JSON — a plain-text data format of
"key": "value"pairs. One setting in Lykia accepts JSON: the custom color map in Theme settings → Color swatches. - CDN — a content delivery network; in practice, a direct web address for a file. Where Lykia asks for a "direct MP4 URL", it means a video's own address — for example one copied from Content → Files in your Shopify admin.
- Handle — Shopify's URL-friendly name for a product, collection or page: lowercase, with hyphens for spaces ("Midnight Blue" →
midnight-blue). One Lykia setting asks for a handle and says so (Product handle in Theme settings → Gift wrapping); Custom color map (JSON) asks for color names written the same way, as handles. - Focal point — the part of an image that stays visible when the frame crops it, such as which part of a video or photo survives a portrait crop on a phone.
- App block — a block provided by an app you've installed, added inside a section the same way as the theme's own blocks. In Lykia, the Product section on the product page has a slot for one, and Featured product accepts them too.
